About the Author
James M. Poterba is the Mitsui Professor and associate head of
the economics department at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
He received his Ph.D. and master's degree in economics from Oxford
University. Professor Poterba is co-author of the book The Effects
of Special Saving Programs on Saving and Wealth. He has published
numerous articles on employer-provided pensions, government incentives
for saving, and personal saving behavior. His areas of current
interest include tax policy in relation to tax-exempt bonds,
government intervention in education and health markets, and
the effects of special savings programs on wealth.
